چکیده

A new modeling approach is presented to improve numerical simulations of groundwater flow and contaminant transport in fractured geological media. The approach couples geological and numerical models through an intermediate mesh generation phase. As a first step, a platform for 3D geological modeling is used to represent fractures as 2D surfaces with arbitrary shape and orientation in 3D space. The advantage of the geological modeling platform is that 2D triangulated fracture surfaces are modeled and visualized before building a 3D mesh. The triangulated fractures are then transferred to the mesh generation software that discretizes the 3D simulation domain with tetrahedral elements. The 2D triangular fracture elements do not cut through the 3D tetrahedral elements, but they rather form interfaces with them. The tetrahedral mesh is then used for 3D groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulations in discretely fractured porous media. The resulting mesh for the 2D fractures and 3D rock matrix is checked to ensure that there are no negative transmissibilities in the discretized flow and transport equation, to avoid unrealistic results. To test the validity of the approach, flow and transport simulations for a tetrahedral mesh are compared to simulations using a block-based mesh and with results of an analytical solution. The fluid conductance matrix for the tetrahedral mesh is also analyzed and compared with known matrix values. & 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A parallel scientific software for heterogeneous hydrogeoloy

Numerical modelling is an important key for the management and remediation of groundwater resources. As opposed to surface water and to highly karstic geologies, groundwater does not flow in well-identified open streams but is like water flowing in the voids of a sponge. Several field experiments show that the natural geological formations are highly heterogeneous, leading to preferential flow ...

Lattice Boltzmann modeling for tracer test analysis in a fractured Gneiss aquifer

Fractured Gneiss aquifers present a challenge to hydrogeologists because of their geological complexity. Interpretation methods which can be applied to porous media cannot be applied to fractured Gneiss aquifers because flow and transport occur in fractures, joints, and conduits. In contrast, the rock matrix contribution to groundwater flow is not very important in Gneiss aquifers. Sodium chlor...

Modeling Multiphase Non-isothermal Fluid Flow and Reactive Geochemical Transport in Variably Saturated Fractured Rocks: 1. Methodology

Reactive fluid flow and geochemical transport in unsaturated fractured rocks have received increasing attention for studies of contaminant transport, groundwater quality, waste disposal, acid mine drainage remediation, mineral deposits, sedimentary diagenesis, and fluid-rock interactions in hydrothermal systems. This paper presents methods for modeling geochemical systems that emphasize: (1) in...

Two-Dimensional Solute Transport with Exponential Initial Concentration Distribution and Varying Flow Velocity

The transport mechanism of contaminated groundwater has been a problematic issue for many decades, mainly due to the bad impact of the contaminants on the quality of the groundwater system.
